Wear:
“A stitch in time saves nine” is great advice when it comes to hand woven rugs. Watch for signs of wear, fraying or unraveling of the pile, fringe, or selvage (binding). Do not postpone repairs and restorations. Quick action by a repair professional will save you money, as well as preserve the beauty and value of your rug.
Rotating Your Rug:
Rotating your rugs end-for-end will allow them to wear more evenly, maintaining their original appearance. Rotate your hand woven rugs at least once each year. When you notice the high traffic area of your rug starting to show dirt, or when the nap has lost its original direction or shape, it is typically time to have it cleaned. After cleaning, rotate your rugs according to the amount of direct sunlight they receive. A simplified rule of thumb is rotating your rugs annually during spring cleaning.
Vacuuming:
Vacuum your rugs regularly. When, vacuuming, go back and forth in the same direction over the entire rug, avoiding the fringe. It is best to vacuum across the rug (in the opposite direction of the fringe). If you are vacuuming with a beater brush, set the brush so it just touches the top of the pile and moves easily across the rug. Be sure to vacuum the back of the rug at least once each year. |
