Meet Ray and Hamid Adib

Few connections with the panorama of human history are so accessible in this century as Oriental rugs, whose designs and techniques date back to at least 500 B.C. Much of the early development of the craft and art of the hand-knotted carpet is centered in the Persian Empire. It is the Persian carpet that remains the epitome of beauty, value and durability.

At Adib’s Persian Rug Company in Walnut Creek California and Adib’s Rug Gallery in Salt Lake City, this nearly 2,500 year-old tradition blossoms amid a huge selection of old and new Persian and Oriental carpets and other woven treasures manufactured throughout the world.

Ray and Hamid Adib were taught about Persian rugs from their early childhood by their father, a noted carpet manufacturer from a suburb of Kashan, Iran.  The elder Adib who was truly a traditionalist, believed in following the several thousand years of tradition and maintaining the honor and names of the family and town by creating some of the finest products.  Ray and Hamid were always directly involved with the people who were hand spinning and dying the wool, creating the looms and designs, weaving etc.  They were both thought to be able to weave and repair damaged rugs.

The elder Adib always selected from the most qualified weavers and supplied them the best dyes, unique designs, high quality hand spun wool, silk, and cotton.  He also purchased unique rugs from other weavers in towns and villages within a large area around Kashan and Isphahan.  In their youth, Ray and Hamid followed their father’s lead, becoming experts on Persian carpets and later, commissioning their own rugs and also making their own rug-buying trips.

The elder Adib was a teacher as well as an artist.  He came from a family that for several generations were teachers and weavers of Persian rugs.  He always promoted education and art during his lifetime.  He encouraged his children to obtain the best education available anywhere in the world and be well-rounded.  That is a main reason why Ray and Hamid moved to United States to pursue their education.  Both Ray and Hamid attended the University of California Berkeley majoring in Civil and Mechanical engineering respectively.

While at school, Ray and Hamid continued the family tradition by teaching different communities about the art, history, and traditions of hand-woven rugs. Ray continued with his efforts in Walnut Creek, CA where he opened his showroom approximately four decades ago.  Hamid worked side by side with Ray also learning from him and in 1986 moved on to Utah. Hamid had a four year commitment to the University of Utah and immediately started educating and providing hand-woven rugs to the local community. Hamid has been working as an educator, research scientist, and provider of some the best and unique rugs in the world since his original move.

Today, Ray Adib, Dr. Hamid Adib, and their staff are among the United State’s most knowledgeable authorities on these magnificent artworks. From the thousands of types of Persian and Oriental weavings, they can pinpoint the age and origin of a piece, often to the very village and sometimes even the families who have created them.

The Adib Family has provided thousands of customers with a wide selection of quality rugs, ranging from small bag faces and prayer rugs to palace-sized carpets. Adib’s Persian and Oriental carpets come from cities and villages across the length and breadth of Persia (Iran), India, Pakistan, Turkey, Afghanistan, China, the Caucasus, Morocco, and Tibet. Each is a highly refined work of art, whether it comes from a sophisticated rug factory, a village loom, or a nomadic encampment.

With several generations of experience and knowledge, the Adib family is uniquely able to offer customers a storehouse of information about fine rugs, flat weaves and runners, and a wealth of advice for the investment in and care of hand-knotted carpets. Adib’s is truly the place to discover the breathtaking beauty and lasting quality in the woven world.
